Away from Glasgow early, heading for Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. Perhaps we'll have a sighting of Nessie! Deb and I got the OMG seats on the bus today. These are the ones right behind the driver that elicit spontaneous responses as you drive down these twisty very narrow roads and have to pass large trucks/ lorries, and other buses going the other way, often with only inches to spare. Better than any ride in any amusement park. Our bus driver, Gavin, is absolutely awesome, and our fellow travellers all agree! Good job, Gavin!
Our first stop was a picturesque little village called Luss, right on Loch Lomond. In the churchyard here was a Norse grave dating back to the 11th century. It was currently undergoIng some restoration so not much to see.
Travelling on, we passed over the Caledonian Canal at several points. This connects various parts of Loch Ness to other lochs and waterways through a series of locks and canals, thereby creating a waterway across the middle of Scotland (the locks connect the lochs, eh?!) This project was conceived in the 1700's and completed in 1822. Quite an undertaking in those times!
Our route took us right into the Scottish Highlands, very rugged and spectacular country, with a stop at the Three Sisters collection of hills and passing Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain. Unfortunately it was shrouded in cloud and mist.
The afternoon had a stop at Urquhart castle nestled on the shore of Loch Ness, then a boat cruise on the loch, and a visit to the Nessie Centre. Then we were back on the road to Kings Mill Hotel in Inverness. Very posh hotel. Before dinner, we ventured into the world of Scotch....Deb tried a 12 year old Balvenie and Jon had another brand we cannot recall, both were quite nice! Maybe we'll be able to compare notes, Pam!
We cannot get the wifi to send our photos at this time, so sorry, no pics just yet. ( resolved!)
